On the work of supporting OASBO ...

Serving on the board has been such a rewarding experience. It’s given me the chance to support the organization’s mission while working alongside a passionate and talented group of people. One of the best parts has been seeing how our decisions and efforts make a real difference in the community we serve—it’s truly inspiring. I’ve also enjoyed the personal growth that comes with board service, whether it’s gaining new perspectives, building leadership skills, or expanding my network.

Four Reasons for Serving on Our Board
Mission Alignment

Individuals join boards because they are passionate about an association's mission and values.

Professional & Personal Development

Board service offers a unique platform for professional and personal development. As a board member, you gain valuable leadership, strategic planning, and decision-making skills. Interacting with others who are enthusiastic will expand your network and potentially open doors to new opportunities in your career.

Networking & Relationship Building

Joining the Board provides excellent networking opportunities by fostering interactions with other board members, staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders. Building these relationships are valuable for both personal and professional growth, as well as for the Association. Connections made through board service lead to collaborative efforts, partnerships, and sharing of resources.

Leadership & Governance Experience

Serving on a nonprofit board allows you to gain hands-on experience in governance and leadership. You will be involved in critical decision-making processes, financial oversight, and strategic planning, which can enhance your leadership skills.

On reasons to do the work ...

OASBO was such a huge support to me when I was starting my career in school finance. Serving on the board provides me the opportunity to give back to an organization that has given me so much from valuable professional development to life long friendships. OASBO is an organization that strives to continually adapt as the work evolves and it's very rewarding to be a part of moving that work forward.

Elected Board Positions

Commitment

The Executive Board positions (officers) are progressive, meaning once elected, the Treasurer will serve one year in each officer position for a total of four years.

The term of a Zone Director is two years and two consecutive terms may be served.

Eligibility

Prospective candidates must be a current OASBO school member.

Process

An election for Treasurer is conducted each year during the Annual Conference normally held in July.

Zone Director positions are elected around the annual meeting in the zone.

Voting is electronic so that all members of a zone can vote regardless of attendance at their respective zone meeting.

Board Role & Governance

Board Purpose

The OASBO Board is responsible for development of the annual budget, enforcing and complying with governing documents, and setting the strategic direction of the association.

The Board uses three documents to direct their work and develop new initiatives.

  • The Bylaws & Constitution is the governing document by which the association was founded. Changes to this document require membership approval.
  • The Strategic Plan is developed annually and reviewed at each board meeting. The purpose of the plan is to direct new initiatives and strengthen services for members. The Board spends time each year discussing areas to improve and sets actions to meet the goals.
  • The Policy Manual is reviewed annually. The Board may choose to modify the policies from time to time.

Time Commitment

A board member can expect to spend between 3 - 8 hours a month on board or association business. Some months require a short meeting only while others require a full day meeting and additional working board activities such as subcommittee work, event preparation and speaker coordination, program monitoring, etc.

Calendar

The Board typically meets meets ten times per year, three of which are in-person and the remainder are virtual. Meetings are normally scheduled during the work day. In person meetings are typically held in:

  • March or April (linked to one of the Zone Meetings)
  • July (linked to the Summer Conference)
  • November (linked to the Fall Conference)

Associate Member Representative

The Associate Member Representative serves as a liaison to the Board and business partner community. The term is two years and two terms may be served consecutively. Generally, a letter of interest is requested when the position is open for appointment. This Board appoints this position.

The primary responsibilities are serving as the chair of the Associate Membership Committee, working with the Board to develop and improve mutually beneficial programs and offerings, and assisting in developing and maintaining relationships between the association and business partner community.
